Our History

In Malaysia, as in many tropical developing countries, soil erosion and sediment pollution remain significant environmental challenges associated with land development. With annual rainfall often exceeding 3,000 mm, poorly managed construction activities can result in severe soil loss, degraded river systems, increased flood risks, and adverse impacts on aquatic and coastal ecosystems.

Established in 2008, the Malaysian Stormwater Organisation (MSO) is a non-profit professional organisation dedicated to advancing sustainable stormwater management and promoting best practices in erosion and sediment control (ESC). MSO works closely with government agencies, industry professionals, academic institutions, and international organisations to strengthen professional competency, promote environmental stewardship, and support the implementation of effective stormwater management practices across Malaysia.

MSO is the regional chapter of EnviroCert International (ECI) and administers internationally recognised professional certification programmes in Malaysia, including the Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), Certified Erosion, Sediment and Stormwater Inspector (CESSWI), Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality (CPSWQ), and the Malaysian Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (MY-CISEC).

These internationally recognised certification programmes have helped strengthen professional competency in erosion and sediment control, stormwater quality, and sustainable stormwater management. The certifications are recognised by industry and regulatory authorities and support the implementation of effective environmental management practices and regulatory compliance in Malaysia.

Today, MSO continues to serve as a leading platform for professional certification, technical training, conferences, workshops, and knowledge sharing, supporting the advancement of resilient and sustainable stormwater management in Malaysia.
